Two major questions are asked when it comes to a Root Canal: How much does the treatment cost and does it hurt? The price of a root canal depends on the number of roots and “channels”. Pain, however, is something that the dental world has all by eliminated.
Determining channels
The anterior teeth, i.e. the incisors, the laterals and the canines, generally have only one canal. Six out of eight premolars also have a single channel. The other two premolars have two.
The first upper premolars have three or four channels. Rare exceptions cause some molars to have up to six channels. In addition, treatment difficulty may vary depending on the age and condition of the tooth.
It should be noted that endodontic retreatment is also more complicated and, therefore, more expensive. There is also a price difference depending on whether the treatment is done by a GP or specialist, also known as an endodontist. Thus, the price of a root canal treatment can vary enormously depending on the case.
Who can do a root canal treatment?
A general dentist, as noted above, is able to perform root canal treatments. Depending on the difficulty of the case, a general dentist can refer their patients to an endodontist. What happens after a Root Canal?
The tooth is rid of the infection and the bacteria that caused the problem. This allows the body to heal. During the first few days, some sensitivity will be normal and will be attenuated rapidly.
The complete cure will take from a few weeks to a few months. But are there any guarantees of a root canal? The chances of success are close to 95%. No teeth are safe from decay or fracture.
What is an Endodontist?
An endodontist is a dentist who tackles the most difficult root canal cases. The endodontist reserves his or her practice to this field of interest only. What is the role of the dentist following a root canal?
Once completed, an x-ray will be taken one year after treatment. If there are pains felt after a root canal treatment, just note that most of these are normal. The dentist may prescribe antibiotics and an anti-inflammatory.
